Product Overview
SpaGuard® Total Alkalinity Increaser raises the total alkalinity of spa and hot tub water. Total alkalinity buffers pH, so when it runs low, pH swings up and down with every chemical addition, a problem known as "pH bounce." The label states it raises total alkalinity and prevents pH bounce. The active ingredient is 100% sodium hydrogen carbonate (sodium bicarbonate), and the bottle holds 2 lb (907 g) of granules.
Test total alkalinity first. SpaGuard® states that 1 tablespoon per 100 gallons raises total alkalinity by 25 ppm, so you can work out the dose from your spa's capacity and the increase you need. Broadcast the measured amount over the water with the pump running, circulate for 30 minutes, then retest before adjusting pH. Use the alkalinity range your spa manufacturer recommends.
The label carries the CAUTION signal word: may cause eye irritation. Keep it out of reach of children and do not mix it with other chemicals. It is a water balancer and does not sanitize the spa. If you prefer pre-measured tablets, SpaGuard® also makes Rapid-Dissolve Alkalinity Increaser Tabs.
